The sport of NRA Action Pistol has been around since the early 1980’s. Its origins trace back to the great Ray Chapman (1975 IPSC World Champion) and renowned leather holster maker John Bianchi, Founder of Bianchi International. In 1984 the National Rifle Association Of America started coordinating the Championship. The outcome is a challenging mix of PPC (Police Pistol Combat) and IPSC (International Practical Shooters Confederation) courses of fire, mixing speed and accuracy; making you an overall faster and more accurate pistol marksman regardless of specific discipline. International Pistol consists of six different types of pistol events including Free Pistol, Standard Pistol, Center-fire Pistol, Women’s Sport Pistol, Rapid Fire Pistol, and Air Pistol. All are part of the International Pistol program here at River Bend except for Air Pistol (At least for now!) As the name implies, the rules for conducting these events including course of fire, types of pistols, allowed calibers, and other equipment are consistent through out the world and governed by the International Shooting Sports Federation (ISSF) and USA Shooting. In this way you can compare your scores and ability level with shooters through out the world.
Bullseye (or Conventional Pistol) is the granddaddy of all popular handgun competition in this country. Many individuals become interested in pistol competition; however, unless they start off with the proper information, they find it difficult. The cost of equipment is generally a stumbling block. Many feel that unless they have the best of everything they cannot compete. This is not true. Most start with a minimum investment of a .22 caliber rimfire pistol (autoloader or revolver), spotting scope and stand, and eye and ear protection. The International Defensive Pistol Association (IDPA) is the governing body of a shooting sport that simulates self-defense scenarios and real life encounters. It was founded in 1996 as a response to the desires of shooters worldwide. The organization now boasts membership of more than 20,000, including members in 50 foreign countries.
One of the unique facets of this sport is that it is geared toward the new or average shooter, yet is fun, challenging and rewarding for the experienced shooter. The founders developed the sport so that practical gear and practical guns may be used competitively. An interested person can spend a minimal amount on equipment and still be competitive.
The main goal is to test the skill and ability of the individual, not equipment or gamesmanship. “Competition only” equipment is not permitted in this sport.

Steel Challenge, a division of USPSA, offers a port of entry to the shooting sports that is far less intimidating than practical shooting.
